The ABC powder extinguisher is the most common hand-held extinguisher in Estonia – universal, it extinguishes fires involving solids, flammable liquids, gases and live electrical equipment up to 1000 V, and withstands cold. The powder causes extensive and costly clean-up and can also damage property untouched by the fire, so powder extinguishers are not used in households. When extinguishing flammable liquids, the powder has no lasting effect – the smallest spark can reignite the fire. A powder extinguisher is required in a car (1 kg), van (2 kg) and garage (6 kg). Maintenance: have the extinguisher inspected every 2 years; every year if exposed to moisture, vibration or other damaging effects. Service every 10 years (unless the manufacturer specifies more often) and after each use – after use the extinguisher loses pressure within a couple of hours.
